National League announces ‘3UP’ campaign
Richard Tomkins, HUST chair and FSA National Councillor observes an opportunity.
It was around 2000/2001 that Hereford supporters played our own small part publicising the groundswell move for ‘2 Up from the Conference’. I recall I was the HUISA chairman at the time and we produced ‘2 UP’ placards for a televised match. Apparently, it puzzled the pundits but in 2003 this became a reality.
The National League has announced this month it is now encouraging the EFL to adopt ‘3 UP’. As reported by the FSA, National League chair Jack Pearce said: “As well as increased financial stability, 3UP would mean a fluid football pyramid where teams can win promotion from the bottom to the top fairly. It will give more opportunity to clubs relegated from EFL League Two to ‘bounce back’.
Remember when we fell out of the Football League in 1997? Only one place was available to get back. Hereford fans more than most know the quandary. Whilst it is not expected to be voted in by the EFL this summer, the proposal remains on the table. As a National Game rep on the FSA, I believe fans will be strongly in favour.
