Supporters’ Trust Pays Tribute to Club Historian, Ron Parrott
All Hereford supporters, and even football fans wider afield, will be saddened at the loss of Ron Parrott, a wonderful Club Historian. He was the ‘oracle’ on all things Hereford United / FC and wrote several books.
Richard Tomkins, HUST chair says “I corresponded with Ron quite regularly to fill gaps in my knowledge. Two stories that we recounted come to mind, one of yesteryear and one more recent that he really enjoyed. Ron said such stories are why football at Edgar Street was so special to him.
In 1955 United won the Worcestershire Senior Cup at Kidderminster. My father, Geoff, was courting my mother at the time, and cheekily asked Hereford manager, George Tranter, if he could take the cup home to show her. Tranter agreed saying “Just bring it back tomorrow”. The Worcestershire Senior Cup stood proudly on Dad’s kitchen table in Moorhampton that night!
In recent times we’ve been playing South Shields. Paddy Woods played for United 1947-54 and his son, Edmund, came down as a Shields supporter bringing us Paddy’s reserve league medal. Ron provided some thorough research for Edmund that’s been featured in the ‘Talking Bull’ fanzine.
Heritage is something that we rightly prize in football. Ron Parrott is its personification. Thanks for everything, Ron.”
